Building a Resilient Brand in the Digital Era: Insights from Acceptance Insurance

Rachel (Stein) Hislop

Digital Trust Champion

Introduction:

In today's hyper-connected and ever-evolving digital landscape, brand management has become an intricate art form. Rachel Hislop, VP of Marketing and Brand Innovation, and Ken Hampton, Executive Vice President and Chief Sales Officer for Acceptance Insurance, share their perspectives on brand management and how Acceptance has successfully evolved its 50-year-old brand to be resilient in this digital era.

The Power of Consistency:

Consistency is the cornerstone of a successful brand. It ensures that every interaction a customer has with your brand aligns with its core values and messaging. Rachel emphasizes that consistency must be maintained across all touchpoints, from the company's website and social media channels to its customer service and advertising campaigns. By developing clear brand guidelines and empowering employees to embody the brand's essence, Acceptance has created a seamless and unified customer experience, fostering trust and loyalty.

Leveraging Technology for Brand Visibility:

In the digital age, technology plays a vital role in enhancing brand visibility and engagement. Acceptance recognizes the importance of a strong online presence and leverages various digital platforms to amplify its brand messaging, including search engine optimization, social media marketing, and content creation. As a result, the company’s social media interactions have increased by nearly 5x, and website visits from Google listings have almost doubled since 2020. As of May 31, 2023, views on Google maps have increased 28% versus this same time period in 2020 and are on pace to increase almost 2.5 times this amount by the end of 2023. Whether it is adopting new communication channels, incorporating chatbots for improved customer support, or leveraging artificial intelligence for data- driven insights, the brand embraces innovation to maintain its competitive edge.

Customer-Centricity as the Driving Force:

Building a resilient brand goes beyond logos and taglines; it is about establishing an emotional connection with customers. Ken stresses the significance of customer-centricity as the driving force behind brand management. By understanding customers' needs and pain points, Acceptance has developed tailored solutions and personalized experiences that resonate with its target audience. The brand's commitment to exceptional customer service has resulted in long-term relationships and positive word-of-mouth recommendations. This is evidenced by the awards Acceptance receives. 2023 marks its third year winning the 800 Reputation Award.

Crafting a Compelling Brand Story:

A powerful brand story acts as a bridge between a company and its customers. It humanizes the brand, evokes emotions, and sets the stage for building lasting relationships. By highlighting Acceptance’s core values of trust, transparency, and empathy, Acceptance sought to position the company as a trusted partner in times of need. As part of the company’s brand story, Acceptance created the “Acceptance Pledge” and encouraged our customers to take part in a commitment to emulate these core values in their own communities. This pledge conveys our belief that “everyone is someone” and that all individuals deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. Almost 20,000 people have taken the pledge online and at our local agencies. By merging the digital and local interactions to create a cohesive story, Acceptance has been able to stay relevant to its customers no matter what their omnichannel interaction.

Maintaining Brand Integrity:

Protecting a brand's integrity is crucial for long-term success. Rachel emphasizes the importance of consistent brand monitoring to identify any potential threats or reputation risks. This includes actively monitoring social media channels, review platforms, and customer feedback. By promptly addressing any issues or negative sentiment, Acceptance has maintained an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and has been able to reinforce its commitment to serving its customers with respect and compassion.

Prioritizing Your Workforce:

As a people-first company, Acceptance continues to prioritize its team members by creating an uplifting and welcoming culture that values diversity, and, in the words of its service vision, encourages colleagues to “take care of each other.” Initiatives like EmpowHer, the company’s employee resource group for female team members, help individual team members to work together in creating a supportive workplace. Aside from being the right thing to do, company leaders understand that individual team members can become powerful brand ambassadors to help recruit new talent in a competitive hiring market. In 2022, the company was named to Forbes' annual list of America's Best Midsize Employers, Best Employers for New Graduates, and Best Employers for Diversity.

Investing in Community:

8 out of 10 consumers believe that a brand’s impact on its local community matters. By engaging with communities through charitable work, sponsorships, and volunteer efforts, Acceptance demonstrates its commitment to improving the lives of its customers beyond their insurance policies. In 2020, the company launched its “Get a Smile, Give a Smile” campaign, which provided 85 people the opportunity to win up to $5,000, while also giving $5,000 to their favorite charities. Today, Acceptance works with Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers Big Sisters to connect its team members with volunteer opportunities. By investing in its communities, Acceptance is able to share its brand story with customers while making a positive difference in the markets it serves.

Conclusion:

As marketing and sales leaders, we understand that effective brand management goes beyond a logo or visual identity. It is a multifaceted endeavor that requires a deep understanding of customers, a compelling brand story, consistency across channels, and a willingness to adapt to evolving market dynamics. We encourage businesses across industries to invest in brand management as a strategic imperative, as it serves as the bedrock for sustained growth and competitiveness in today's landscape.
